I don’t really understand a lot of the stuff that goes on in internet land.
The whole business of the meme- or all those strange quizzes on facebook (your autism quotient- really- autism isn’t a fun activity to be tested on, is it?) – but I do occasionally participate if the questions are interesting.
These were. So the idea is that you answer 8 questions, tag 8 people , and ask 8 questions. Kim, from Hireath asked the following questions:
Did you have a favorite Aunt or Uncle growing up and if so, what made them so special to you? My Aunt Anna- she was 11 years older than my mother and more like a grandmother to us. She taught me how to love children -and to treat them with love and respect.
2. Carpet or hardwood floors; what is your preference?
hardwood- although I don’t have any.
3. Do you remember your dreams upon awaking?
Always. And I go back to sleep and fix them if they are disturbing.
4. How many different churches have you attended in the past decade?
One, mainly- however we tried two others for short intervals.
5. Do you prefer to do your shopping in stores or online?
I prefer making gifts and buying from small stores.
6. Do you label and date the back of family photos?
Never. Although I appreciate it when other family members do.
7. What is your least favorite household task?
Dusting. It makes me sneeze and my sinuses get all clogged up.
8. Do you stroll the aisles in the library for interesting books to bring ho
me or search the online catalog to reserve the specific book you are looking for?
I never go to libraries. They want the books back and I’m a re-reader. I buy books at used book stores and either keep them or pass them on.
My questions:
1. Do you follow recipes exactly the first time you make something, or start changing them up from the beginning?
2. Will you make a recipe without seeing a picture of the finished dish first?
3. Do you remember the first chapter book you read as a child?
4. Do you make or buy a majority of Christmas gifts?
5. When was the last time you made bread and what kind was it?
6. What is your favorite vacation spot ( beach, Mts., big city, theme park) – and how often do you get to go?
7. Do you still send Christmas cards- if so approx. how many?
8. What was the last good book you read- and would you recommend it?
And now, the 8 friends I’m tagging:
1. Elizabeth
2.Jill
3.Allyson
4.Joanna
5.Celia
6.Brydie
7.Karen
8.Martha
Don’t feel pressured to join in if you don’t want to- I just thought it would be fun to find out a little more about you and give you a venue to ask your own questions if you’d like.
I promise I won’t do this again. 🙂
Heidi,
I know you didn’t tag me, but your questions are interesting ones, so I wanted to reply.
1: When I prepare a new recipe, I frequently substitute spices for ones I prefer. And I also use low-fat varieties of ingredients whenever possible.
2: Not usually. I’m a visual person.
3: I don’t know if it’s the first chapter book I read or not, but I remember reading Black Beauty. It made me cry, and it is probably partly responsible for my seeking a job with the Humane Society.
4: I used to make most of my gifts. I really should get back to that.
5: Does banana bread count? (It’s been about a month ago.)
6: I am usually just so thrilled to get away. I’d have to say it’s a tie between the beach and the mountains. I love nature, and there’s plenty of that in either location.
7: I haven’t sent cards the past two years. There’s so much that has needed my attention that I gave myself permission to take that off my to-do list.
8: The Help. Loved it!
Adrienne!
I’m so glad you replied! I am so hesitant to do these because a lot of people just DON’T want to play! I love it that you did- !
( I was so glad to see you made it to the photo workshop in Texas! Sometimes you need a little space and place of your own- glad you took advantage of the opportunity!)
Great questions, Heidi! May I answer yours?
1. Do you follow recipes exactly the first time you make something, or start changing them up from the beginning?
It depends. If there’s an ingredient that my family doesn’t like, I’ll either leave it out or substitute. Most of the time I make recipes that sound good the way they read, so I follow them most of the time and make adjustments the next time. There are always adjustments.
2. Will you make a recipe without seeing a picture of the finished dish first? Yes.
3. Do you remember the first chapter book you read as a child? No, but my first love was Pinnochio. I remember taking it to bed with me and ‘reading’ it at naptime, so I must’ve been very little
4. Do you make or buy a majority of Christmas gifts? I used to make nearly all my Christmas gifts but not so much any more.
5. When was the last time you made bread and what kind was it? I made pumpkin bread a week or so ago.
6. What is your favorite vacation spot ( beach, Mts., big city, theme park) – and how often do you get to go? North Woods of Wisconsin, once a year.
7. Do you still send Christmas cards- if so approx. how many? I send a few; not many.
8. What was the last good book you read- and would you recommend it? Les Miserables. I think it’s the best novel ever written.
Thanks, Kim- so far this is a lot of fun!
I still don’t want to get too involved with the facebook quizzes, but – WOW- two responses and not even from the people I tagged!
I’m not a huge fan of memes but they always end up being fun. I always and only invite people to join in if they want to. No pressure. Never pressure.
And I never put pressure on myself to participate in a meme if I don’t have time or don’t want to.
Darling, I don’t usually play along with these things, but anything for you.. 🙂
1.Unfortunately, I start changing things up pretty much straight away, often motivated by the fact that I’m too lazy to go to the store if I’m missing an ingredient!
2. Yes, I will, but I don’t often have to!
3. I’m pretty sure the first chapter book I read as a child was an Enid Blyton, but I can’t remember which one. Maybe Mr Galliano’s Circus?
4. We make almost all our Christmas gifts, with the exception of gifts for our sons and each other.
5. I last made bread on the weekend – cheese and olive sourdough scrolls for school lunches (I make them every weekend!)
6. Our favourite vacations are usually in nearby Canberra, but we haven’t been away for years.
7. I don’t send any Christmas cards at all. I give Christmas cookies to everyone I know instead.
8. The last good book I read was Hugh Fearlessly Eats It All by Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall – great collection of short essays. Definitely recommend!
Thank you, Celia!
I love the book recommendations!
Honestly, I think I participated so that I could ask for everyone’s last good book!
I never do this either but… never say never…
1. Only if it’s bread or cake. Otherwise I substitute away and change methods quite happily
2. Yes, I did some ‘test baking’ earlier in the year, no pictures. But I looked on the net when I really didn’t have a clue what I was aiming for with ‘babka’.
3. Dr Doolittle? A Little Princess? Pipi Longstocking? Stuart Little? Honestly, can’t remember. Just guessing here. A chapter book is a phrase I never heard before! That’s a story with chapters I suppose.
4. Depends from year to year. No rules about Christmas.
5. Delicate milk loaf for toast and more.
6. North Norfolk coast – last there Aug 09 and going next weekend! Yay!
7. I send about 3 dozen cards.
8. I don’t read many new books at the moment. Too much time taken on the internet I think. I was re-reading Pilgrim at Tinker’s Creek by Annie Dillard last week. I think she is extraordinary.
I like Annie Dillard- she has a quiet spirit.
-Chapter books are a second stage book here – children start with small one idea book that are only about a chapter long and fully illustrated.
thanks for answering, Joanna. I usually don’t do these things either, but this seemed rather innocuous so I decided to give it a try. 🙂
I hear you with the dusting although not because of sinus, more because everything else takes priority.
1/ My catch phrase is “I didn’t follow the recipe”…maybe I should more… I don’t think I could though!
2/ I would, but do prefer a picture of something to aim for, as then I can completely change it.
3/ I’m guessing something Enid Blyton as well, so many, it’s hard to distinguish.
4/ Make the majority of gifts…and enjoy it.
5/ Last time I made bread was about 4 hours ago. Almond Coffee Bread- happy to say it worked.
6/ Favourite vacation spot…oh…so many wonderful places not seen for so long. Tasmania and Italy both not visited in far too long.
7/Christmas cards up until this year yes, but not sure if it’s going to happen this year.
8/ Last book “never order chicken on a Monday”- Matthew Evans. A lovely insight in to the food world.
Brydie,
Can you tell my questions are all based on some quirky part of my own life? I also don’t follow recipes- I use them as a direction or guide and then fill in my own details. BUT I want to a picture to see what I’m not exactly making! I’m not sure about my first book – but I think it was either Pipi Longstocking or Glenda of Oz.
Almond Coffee Bread sounds wonderful. Do you have a recipe to guide along the way?
good grief no! 😉 no recipe, just winging it. It’s my 4th incarnation and I think I’ve got it now. A progression of ingredients added and omitted. Wish I could send you some.
You got a lot of responses.
1. Do you follow recipes exactly the first time you make something, or start changing them up from the beginning?
I try to follow the first time, but I always always always add vanilla to something sweet – even if it doesn’t call for it…
2. Will you make a recipe without seeing a picture of the finished dish first?
Not usually. It scares me to not know what it SHOULD look like!
3. Do you remember the first chapter book you read as a child?
Not specifically, but I have found and bought many of the books I loved as a child for my kids.
4. Do you make or buy a majority of Christmas gifts?
Mostly buy. I wish I had the time to make more. I made a really great gift for a bunch of people last year, but I haven’t come up with a good idea this year.
5. When was the last time you made bread and what kind was it?
Can I say today? After work? I am planning on making pumpkin bread!
6. What is your favorite vacation spot ( beach, Mts., big city, theme park) – and how often do you get to go?
Otsego Lake, MI. I spent my summers there as a kid. It will always be “my” vacation spot. Sadly, we don’t have a place to stay there anymore.
7. Do you still send Christmas cards- if so approx. how many? Yes, about 100.
8. What was the last good book you read- and would you recommend it?
Oh, I read constantly. I have been on quite the faerie kick lately… just finished the OR Melling Chronicles of Faerie series – filled with so much folklore, it was exhausting to read, but HUGELY enjoyable.
Very late getting to this and I’m honored to be tagged and thrilled to participate!
1. I almost always change from the beginning, especially if I haven’t shopped well and don’t have the ingredients or are trying to make something without having to go to the store.
2. I don’t need to see a picture, although I like to!
3. The first chapter books I remember reading were the little house on the prairie books.
4. I probably buy more gifts than I make, but would prefer–and often have ideas for–the reverse.
5. Last Thursday I made honey oatmeal bread (in the bread machine).
6. I don’t have a favorite vacation spot–we often go someplace new. I DO love any place with Joe, Taylor and Laurel.
7. We still send about 175 photo cards at Christmas.
8. The last good book I read was Olive Kitteridge. I recommend it for its innovative story-telling and insight into they way people interact. But it was also a difficult book –difficult to keep track of all the characters, and the tone of the book tended more toward despair, although there was hope. I don’t recommend reading it in a grey month like February.
4.
2.
Haha, don’t know where the extra numbers came from–maybe why the check book didn’t balance… 🙂
Jill and Elizabeth!!!
🙂 🙂
I am so pleased you both wanted to play!
These are questions I often think I’d like to know the answers to- maybe to compare with my own responses or just to know a little bit more about those I care for!
Jill- I have a wonderful homemade craft for you- homemade vanilla! It is easy to make – a little pricey- but it is SO VERY good and usually much appreciated! You go out and buy a good quality vodka (I use Grey Goose) and send away for some beans on the internet ( you can google it- compare prices because they really are all over the place.) Find some smallish bottles with good closing tops and then put in a couple of beans ( cut and loosen the beans first) into each bottle and fill the bottle with vodka. Shake every couple of days, keep them out of direct sunlight and in about a month and a half they should be amber colored and ready to go. The vanilla will get stronger over time- suggest they not use it for another month or so- but the vanilla is yummy!
And if they aren’t into baking- vanilla vodka makes a great mixed drink!
Elizabeth- I thought you were going to say Colorado for your vac spot.:)
