This has long been my opinion.
I have been reading Tolkien since I was
15. Rereading the trilogy every year since
my thirties- it is like an autumn journey
I take every year.
And the more I read about Hobbits, the more
familiar they seem. My mother was definitely
from Hobbitish stock. She certainly had the feet
for it. And the earthy sense of humor- in fact-her
reasoning was rather more or less hobbitish as
well.
But I got a couple of pictures from my cousins that
have me totally convinced!
This is my aunt Anna in 1956.
Hobbits for sure!
hahahahaha! Those pictures are adorable. But if you had asked me when I was 15, I would have argued for Elvishness til I was blue in the face!
Hobbits? Or Munchkins? 🙂
I desperately want the confidence to hang my bosom over the waistband of my skirt. 🙂
No doubt about it.
I just LOVE these pictures SO MUCH!
And my Aunt- I have one of my grandma which is pretty precious, too!
Munchkins maybe- but Hobbits for sure, Celia!
The Slovaks have that love for color and nature and all the homely little things…AND the wide feet and humor to go with them!
One easy way to connect to one’s European roots is to tie a headscarf round your head like your beloved Aunt above. I do it sometimes and am always surprised how one can turn into someone else altogether by that simple act. Your Aunt has beautiful long slender arms and I can see her ankles, an elegant woman in her working clothes 🙂
Not so sure about the hobbit or elf thing, but I agree with the rest.
Celia- got to say- I think your “bosom over the waistband” is one of the best comments I’ve ever gotten! I laughed so hard when I read that that my husband came to see what was going on!
Joanna- babushka is the name of those headscarfs and the ladies who wear them! My mother always asked if I had a babushka on cold days- I don’t know why- I would never wear one!
Cynthia- take a tiny step away from grinding reality and “play” with the idea for a moment!
Sue- indubitably!
