Apples by the pound!

63 pounds of apples!!!  That is 3 large bags of very LARGE apples.

Apples and Aidan! 009

That is Jordan’s hand, not my little hobbity hand.  So this is one Gigantic Apple.

We went to Jeromesville and picked MANY apples!  Many, many apples.

Apples=Happy.

I filled a basket I bought at Lehmann’s in Kidron with apples,

Apples and Aidan! 093

And broke out in Johnny Appleseed’s song of thankfulness.

Do you know this song?  Jordan says I sing it all the time- but I don’t think

I sing it ALL the time- just when I have a plethora of Apples!

“The Lord is good to me,

And so I thank the Lord.

For giving all good things to me,

The sun, the rain, and the apple tree.

The Lord is good to me!”

Look at the  beautiful apple trees at Bauman’s orchard.

And we had a wonderful picnic with Luke and Willow and their friend Audra, and Jordan and Frank and AIDAN, and me!

And then we went on a hayride all around the orchard!

This is an apple in my hand.  Actually, you couldn’t see my hand if I held

the apple!

Anybody got any really good apple recipes to share?

  1. I know that song! I don’t know why, but I do. I think maybe we sang it in one of the preschools I used to work at or something. I have a great apple pie recipe that you can can and use later.

    4 1/2 c sugar
    1 c cornstarch
    2 tsp cinnamon
    1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
    3 tbsp lemon juice
2 or 3 drops yellow food coloring
5 1/2 to 6 lbs tart apples, peeled, cored and sliced

Blend first 4 ingred and 1 tsp salt in large pan. Stir in 10 c water; cook and stir until thick and bubbly. Add lemon juice and food coloring. Pack apples into hot jars, leaving 1 in. headspace. Fill w/hot syrup, leaving 1/2 in. headspace. Adjust lids. Process in boiling water bath 15 min for pints, 20 for quarts. Makes 6 quarts.

For serving: prepare pastry for 8 or 9 in pie. Add 1 qt apple pie filling. Top w/crust or crumble. Baake 400 for 50 minutes.

  2. The apples look wonderful! I’m sure whatever you make with them will taste great too. I don’t know the little song, but would like to learn it. If you try Martha’s recipe let me know how it turns out. I have an extra refrigerator out in the garage and keep my apples there all winter; so I can make a fresh pie anytime I want. I’ve never canned filling for pie before but have heard it can be done.

  3. Elizabeth,
They are Melrose apples. They are still on the trees along with the Red and Golden Delicious Apples and of course, the Pink Ladies.
These are great or eating and baking- and they make great applesauce and butter, as well.

  4. Martha- thanks for the recipe! I’m going to make a batch of that up! You might know the song from Disney’s Tall Tales of Johnny Appleseed- or from Joni Earekson Tada singing it on her radio program. It is an old folk song that is truly attributed to J. Appleseed.
Lilly- I will probably be doing a lot of apple yum reporting in the near future!
And Cynthia- Aidan did enjoy his apple- but I think the cheese bread at the picnic was his favorite- or his mama’s pumpkin and ginger cupcakes!
